Getting Started With Homeschooling. Part One, of Three
It’s easy to just put on the television, or an electronic device with some educational apps in the hands of our kids, and hope they figure out the whole learning thing themselves, which sometimes they do, and most times they don’t.
What’s difficult is sitting down and thinking through how you can intentionally and systematically teach your child something that would stick and eventually amount to them learning a new skill or gaining some knowledge of the world around them.
Starting the homeschooling journey is difficult, and while we anticipate the reopening of schools to take over the educating of our children, nothing should stop us from impacting a few knowledge in them while the schools are out.
In this three-part series, I have listed a few things you can do daily to get a few things into the kids during the break.
Select a topic from a subject you are good at: Start with something familiar. The better understanding you have of the material the easier it is to share the knowledge with your child.
Select a convenient time: Timing is crucial in effective homeschooling. The earlier you start in the day, the fewer distractions and more focus you and your child would be while learning.
Make it short: Less is more when starting something new. Start with an hour for the first few days, then slowly increase as you progress.
Celebrate the small things: Create small projects/goals you can accomplish with your child when you begin this journey Once these goals have been met, celebrate them in creative ways. You can have a celebratory dance, clap, shake, no food party something creative to allow your child to see the progress they are making o matter how little.
While we put in these few tips into action, remember to go easy on yourself and your child and have fun all the way.
